I challenge winter driving skills
On roads that wend around
Tree-covered hills.
Up I go, then down
In steep descent,
My nerve near spent.
Highway wet with snow
Trees dark against bright sky
Here and there I see
From valley below
Sunlight glints on window panes,
Telegraphing courage.
I ride my anti-lock brakes
And go slow, yet I quake
And marvel at what it takes
To lure me to risk life and limb
For the privilege of lunch with him,
My grandson home from college.
